Most films on Kanopy include public performance rights (PPR) at no additional cost. You can screen films that have PPR in any group programming that doesn't charge admission. These rights extend to the film title and any images from our website that you want to use to advertise the screening, as long as source credit is given to Kanopy.
Note: For high-profile group screenings, make sure you have a strong internet connection at the screening location. We also recommend having a physical copy or a digital download of the movie as a backup.
If you'd like to hold a virtual screening, viewers need to log in to Kanopy individually so that their library membership can be verified. Instead, you may want to consider watching the movie separately, then meeting up for virtual Q&A or discussion.
Finding PPR rights for an individual film
You can see whether a film has public performance rights from the Kanopy platform.
If a film has public performance rights, you'll see a "PPR" icon next to its runtime (below the Play button).
Films without this icon do not have PPR and can't be used for group programming.
Filtering search results to only films with PPR
To search for films that have public performance rights:
- Log in with your library's Kanopy account.
- Search for a topic or subject, or select a subject from the Browse drop-down.
- Select the Public Performance Rights filter. (You may need to scroll to the bottom of the results to find the filters, and the "Public Performance Rights" filter won't be visible if none of the films in your search have PPR.)
- Select PPR Available.
