Kanopy's website and video player both work with screen reader technologies on desktop browsers, as well as on iOS and Android devices.
For those not familiar with screen reader technology, it enables users to use the keyboard, rather than the mouse, to control video players or other aspects of a browsing experience.
On Kanopy, users can move from component to component in the player using the tab key. The screen reader will read the component's text aloud or announce the component name. The user can then control the component using the space bar or arrow keys. Our player allows users to tab into the player from elsewhere on the webpage or browser. Keyboard navigation is supported for all browsers.
We are currently in the process of making our site compliant with all Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
Kanopy's solution does not presently support audio description for content. We are working to upgrade our video player to support audio description and we are experimenting by adding it to some pilot films for users. Following this, we will be able to make described audio versions of films when they are available from our content partners.
Please note that Kanopy's website is also fully compatible for hearing-impaired users. You can see more information on our accessibility for hearing-impaired users here.
