Kanopy uniquely provides public performance rights for most films in our collection at no additional cost. Where PPR is present, the film can be used for programming events through the library and by patrons that do not charge admission (e.g. teachers in classrooms, community organizations events, etc.) These rights extend to the film title and any images from our website that you may want to use in advertising the screening, as long as source credit is given to Kanopy.
PPR requires that all participants are authorized viewers. Virtual screenings would require viewers to log in individually so that their library membership is verified.
You are able to find out whether a film has public performance rights directly from the platform. For an individual film, look for the "PPR" icon in the drop-down information below the film:
If you don’t see the icon, it means that the film does not have PPR.
To search for films of a certain topic that have PPR, first ensure that you are logged in with your admin account, and begin your search by selecting a subject from the Browse tool, or entering a keyword into “search.” Then scroll to the bottom of the results to find more search features:
Open the drop-down for Public Performance Rights to add "PPR Available" to filter the results in this category to those that have PPR only:
NOTE: As with all streaming solutions, if you are considering showing a Kanopy video to a large audience, you will need to ensure you have a sufficient internet connection at the location of the group showing. We recommend considering a DVD purchase for high profile group screenings. Kanopy does not sell DVDs but we can direct you to the rights owner to purchase the DVD.
