Our 2020 customer survey revealed that the vast majority of libraries want to provide access to more studio content that better resembles their DVD collections. So over the last year, we’ve been working to make this a reality!
We’re thrilled to be partnering with more major film studios like Warners Brothers, MGM, and Lionsgate to provide your library access to hundreds of blockbusters, box office hits, and must-see award-winning films.
Pricing updates for major motion picture content
To provide this content to our library partners, we need to match the market rate and offer these new titles at $4 per credit with a 48-hour rental period. Your existing catalog will not be affected at this time and will remain at the current price going forward.
New Reporting Tools & Invoicing
We have modified our reporting tools in the Administrator Dashboard to include visibility into how patrons interact with content at the new pricing tier. We are also changing our invoices to reflect this new content’s pricing. Here are the new screens and tools we've designed to help so far:
With the updated Regular Play Credits column in the Patrons Report, librarians can view how often patrons are utilizing premium play credits compared to other usage. Credits are now broken down by price (e.g. "1 at $4.00" or "3 at $2.00") and the column is sortable by usage per patron. This report is exportable in Excel format.

Some Frequently Asked Questions
When will the new variable pricing go into effect?
The new pricing went into effect on Thursday, August 26, 2021.
Are Public Performance Rights available for studio content?
Some will be available, however, not all content suppliers allow for PPR for specific titles.
If a library opts out of the PPU titles priced above $2, will those titles still be visible (but inaccessible) to our patrons?
No. Excluded titles will neither be discoverable nor searchable to the end-user.
Is there any content that is currently at $2/circ that will increase to $4/circ, or are the $4 titles a completely new collection?
Right now, the only titles that will cost $4 per play are the new major studio titles from Warner Brothers and MGM. We do not anticipate films currently priced at $2 to increase, but there may be a few exceptions.
What is the windowing policy for Kanopy blockbusters?
Most titles will refresh quarterly; some titles will only be available for a part of a quarter while others will span multiple quarters, depending on our agreement with a studio. We will strive to keep blockbusters available on our platform as long as possible; however, underperforming titles will likely be refreshed as new films become available.
Will you provide a list of studio content coming soon and what’s being removed regularly?
Yes. Please be sure to stay subscribed to our emails for these updates.
How will patrons know they have 48 hours vs 72 hours to watch the content?
Our new interface will include a timer so users know how much time they have left to view films. In our current interface, patrons can see the remaining time to view a film by going to Viewing History under the account dropdown.
Can patrons view films as many times as they’d like over the 48hrs?
For Great Courses, we can limit those separately from credits. (For example, 2 of their 8 credits can be Great Courses.) Could something like this be established for the Major Studio content?
No. Not at this time, but we will consider this idea.
Do you have a list of all titles available on Kanopy organized by publisher, including the new major studio/blockbuster titles?
Yes. Please contact your account representative for details. If you don’t know who your account representative is, contact us at email@example.com to find out.
With the weekly Kanopy emails that come out to library users, will blockbuster content be promoted even if a library has opted out?
No. If a library has opted out blockbuster content will not be promoted. We will have separate email templates for both scenarios.
How does the new pricing affect Kanopy Kids?
Kanopy Kids will not be affected by the new variable pricing.
Will the US-only content be blocked from libraries in other regions so that patrons don’t see it?
Yes. Patrons will only see titles that are available to them.
Will Kanopy still inform us when we are approaching our spending limits?
Yes. It’s an automated process that will not be impacted.
